Are You Trying to Get Everything Done and Heading Towards Burning Out?

When you get into your car and the check engine light comes on you may groan out loud but the next thing you do is to call your mechanic.

You need to get it checked out because, even though it sucks, it is better to take care of your car than to not have a car. Right?

When your body is showing signs that the check engine light is on why do we continue to ask more from ourselves?

Why do we ignore the signs and push on anyway?

And then we expect everyone else to sacrifice themselves the same way that we do?

We refuse to stop and take a minute to see what is going on.

We don’t take anything off of our plates when we have too many things to do.

We just expect them to all get done.

That is called ‘being an adult.”


Yet, what are we doing to ourselves in the process?

Why don’t we immediately stop and evaluate what is going on?

Why We Don’t Treat Ourselves How We Treat Our Cars

I know I just asked a lot of questions that you probably don’t have an answer to.

I want to get you thinking about why we don’t treat ourselves the same way that we treat our cars.

Then the next time something comes up maybe you will think about it differently.

I think that we don’t stop because we have built a habit of expecting more and more from ourselves.

This happens:

  • At work from a boss or client
  • At home from a spouse or family member
  • With our own expectations of what we should do

We have no room to stop because we haven’t had to do it in the past.

Because we got everything done.

And we reinforce the fact that everything must get done by praising someone with “You are an amazing person! I don’t know how you do it all.”

When you experience signs that tell you to check the engine and you never do, then you will continue to run yourself at the same pace.

At some point, you will have to stop.

What will you do then?

The check engine light is a warning to pay attention now, so that you can take action to avoid a shut down in the future.

What you do with the signs your body is sending you is completely up to you.

Signs That Your Check Engine Light is ON

When my check engine light was on I ignored it for a while.

I thought that it was okay to feel like I did because I was successful and making money.

Now I chose not to feel that way in my business or my personal life.

Here are some common signs to watch out for in your own life:

  • Do you feel like you never have enough energy?
  • Do you feel like you need caffeine to survive your morning?
  • Do you feel like you get angry and frustrated a lot?
  • Do you feel like you struggle to get out of bed to go to work?
  • Do you feel like you get sick a lot?
  • Do you feel unable to relax or take any personal time?
  • Do you feel like you have no time so you eat out for lunch and dinner?
  • Do you feel like you have no choice in your profession?
  • Do you feel like you always have to be available for your business? Clients?

These can all be signs that your physical health, mental health, and emotional health are struggling.

And any one of these signs could indicate that you could benefit from taking a break and evaluating what is going on.

So What Can You Do?

Depending on what sign is showing up in your life you get to make a choice about how you want to get support.

For me, I didn’t realize how much I was just surviving my week and using caffeine to make it through each day until I burned out.

I look back and see the bad habits that I had created.

Now I get to move forward and create new healthy habits.

The point I am making is that there is no one size fits all solution.

If you get an opportunity to identify some warning signs that are showing up for you now, then you will have a chance to make a change.

You could prevent burning out by changing a few things in your life that can help turn off the check engine light.
